After losing 45 lbs, I get asked a lot, “How did you do it?”. There is no magic potion or pill that makes us lose weight (the healthy way) instantaneously. I have been in the fitness and nutrition game for many years. I have been all the sizes….big, small, and in between. This past year, I have learned that for me, the best approach is slow and steady. I have made progress, not perfection. Here are 5 tips that have helped me succeed: 1️⃣. Eat smaller portions Yes, I know this is obvious and you’ve heard it a million times. But what has helped me, is starting off with a smaller size plate. I think of the amount of food I would normally take, then I consciously take less. I eat the protein first, then the veggies, and then eat the carb last. By eating slower and focusing on the “better” items, I am usually full before I finish. 2️⃣. Don’t restrict yourself For years, I followed strict meal plans and wouldn’t let myself “cheat”. Lots of people can do this and succeed, but this strategy doesn’t work for me. I eventually end up falling off the wagon and binging on all the bad things. I allow myself to eat anything I want now, I just try to keep it to moderation. 3️⃣. Lift heavy weights Ladies, you will NOT get huge! In order to improve and gain muscle, you need to challenge yourself. Lift the heaviest weights that you are capable of while keeping good form and being safe. 4️⃣. REST We NEED rest days! It is necessary. Prior to my hip surgery I was working out every single day. I couldn’t take a day off because I thought I’d never lose weight. Well, hate to break it to you, exercise causes inflammation. I was in a chronic state of inflammation. It’s ok to rest. And if your body is telling you to take it easy, then take it easy. 5️⃣. Walk As I’ve said in other videos, walking has been key for my progress. Walking helps burn fat while preserving muscle.
