@emetamily: Consider this your sign to plan an at home charcuterie date night with your honey. The formula for a simple, beautiful charcuterie board: Your shopping list - 2 cheeses (I usually do one soft and one hard), 2 types of meat, 2 types of crackers (I choose one “specialty” cracker and one standard), something salty (a nut, olives, or pickles are all good choices), something sweet (candied nuts, chocolate, or some fancy caramels are all nice), a fruit, and a fresh herb for some green. Those are the main building blocks. How to arrange - choose your board, any board. We just use whatever small-ish cutting board or enamel tray strikes our fancy. Start by placing your cheeses first, then fill in spaces with your meat which will probably look best kind of wedged in between your cheeses. Spread your crackers out in a pretty line, fill in the nooks spaces with your nuts, sweet and your fruit. To finish it off, decorate with a little stem of herbs throughout. I like rosemary, oregano or thyme best, but you could use anything! It’s just for looks. The options here are truly endless. I love doing charcuterie boards for dinner on Saturdays this time of year after our kids go to bed. We give the boys hot dogs or something simple. Sometimes we’ll do a mini board and choose just one cheese, one cracker, one nut and a fruit and then make a bigger appetizer type thing on the side to go with - stuffed mushrooms, homemade cheese sticks with marinara, shrimp cocktail, spinach artichoke dip, etc. If we’re feeling it, we’ll often add a spread or a dip that pairs well with the cheese (fig jam or hot pepper jam are both especially good with cheese), fancy olives or pickles for the salty element, a little chocolate for the sweet, blackberries or grapes for the fruit. It’s a simple, but fancy meal that you can get really creative with and it’s fun to shift the board flavors with the seasons!
