Courts Fine, Imprison Illegal Immigrants and Locals Aiding Them By ALICE NACHILEMBE  The Department of Immigration has secured 81 convictions between May 31 and June 5, 2024, with various courts fining and imprisoning illegal immigrants and locals who aided them. Immigration Public Relations Officer Namati Nshinka said A Tanzanian national, Brayson Joackim Ngonyani, was fined K180,000 or sentenced to seven months in prison for aiding and abetting seven undocumented Ethiopian immigrants. Mr Nshinka said Four Ethiopian nationals were also fined K10,000 each or sentenced to nine months in prison for failing to appear before the nearest Immigration Officer on entry.  He said Three others claimed to be juveniles and were referred for age determination. Mr Nshinka also said A Zambian female, Priscar Seleyi, was fined K5,000 or sentenced to four months in prison for harboring and engaging in business with a foreign national whose status does not permit. He a said A Tanzanian nail technician, Paulo Faustine Paulo, was fined K10,000 or sentenced to eight months in prison for engaging in business without a permit. Mr Nshinka said A Congolese national, Basenga Nawej Thethe, was fined K10,000 or sentenced to eight months in prison for illegal entry and unlawful stay. And also A Zimbabwean truck driver, Jefta Gamboreshuma, was fined K20,000 or sentenced to nine months in prison for failing to appear before the nearest Immigration Officer on exit. The Lusaka Regional Immigration Office apprehended 36 suspected illegal immigrants in a routine clean-up operation, bringing the total number of apprehensions to 165 between May 31 and June 5, 2024.
