A very common question I get asked often is how effective are the weight loss drugs (specifically GLP-1 agonists - Ozempic and Wegovy) in patients with breast cancer. This is a great study being presented at @ascocancer by Dr. Sherry Shen, Dr. Neil Iyengar and colleagues that looked at this question! Average weight change is 5% (about 10 lbs) at 12 months of GLP-1 agonist use. Breast cancer treatments (and premature menopause that often results from treatment) can cause metabolic dysfunction and weight gain. People can do all the “right” lifestyle behaviors and still not lose a single pound as a result. These drugs can be a very useful tool - always in conjunction with diet and exercise. They are not right for everyone but can be an option for some! We must also remember that the benefit of the weight loss medications go beyond weight loss as they improve insulin resistance, can reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, reduce risk of obesity related cancers and more. Yes, these meds have a risk of thyroid cancer but it is very low! A separate study being presented at this year’s ASCO meeting found the incident of thyroid cancer in thousands of people on these medications was 0.35%. Let me know your questions. If you have been on these medications, I would love to hear your experience as that may inspire others. #weightloss #weightlossmedication #ozempic #wegovy #breastcancer #prematuremenopause #menopause #oncologist #asco24
