Today’s film: Brian De Palma’s cult classic Phantom of the Paradise (1974) Plot: After an evil record producer betrays him and steals his music to open a lavish rock palace, a disfigured composer sells his soul so that only the woman he loves can perform his work. The film draws on three major literary inspirations: - The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux: A gifted, isolated artist whose devotion to music turns into obsession, echoed in Winslow’s transformation into the Phantom and the theft of his compositions. - Faust: The legend of a man who makes a pact with the Devil in exchange for power or knowledge, reflected in the film’s themes of ambition, success and the price of fame. - The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde: The story of a man who retains his youth while his portrait ages, echoed in Swan’s supernatural bargain and the film’s critique of the entertainment industry’s obsession with eternal youth and success. #briandepalma #phantomoftheparadise #depalma #paulwilliams #70s
