@missclairebenjamin: 🚨 Handling a body odour convo👇 Speaking to someone about body odour can be a very sensitive conversation and one that needs handling sensitively. There can be all sorts of reasons why someone may smell of body odour for example (but not limited to) a medical condition, not being able to afford new clothing, their living conditions, menopause, not wearing deodorant due to religious reasons. They may also simply be unaware that they smell of body odour. It’s really important to handle a conversation like this respectfully. Here are 4 steps I would recommend following: 1️⃣ Let them know you need to have a sensitive and potentially uncomfortable conversation with them and ask them if they are ok for you to have it now. This shows consideration and respect. 2️⃣ Let them know you are having the conversation from a place of care and respect. 3️⃣ Share that you have noticed they smell of body odour and firstly check they are ok. This could sound like: “I’ve noticed you’ve been smelling of body odour recently so I wanted to check if you’re ok and if anything is going on?” Never say other people have been coming to you and complaining. This is likely to make someone feel ashamed and think people are talking about them behind their back. 4️⃣ Let them know you’re there if they need anything. It’s likely they won’t but this shows you’re supportive. 💬 Have you ever had this conversation? Please share your experiences in the comments so we can learn from each other ✨ 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Therefore please use your own judgement when using this advice and adapt it to suit your situation. You’ve got this 💪 🗂️ Save this for when you need it ✈️ Share with someone this could help 🚀 Follow for more tips on managing tricky situations at work #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #corporatelife #emotionalintelligence #communicationskills #manager #difficultconversations #managingpeople #managertips

What about if the body odour stems from cultural differences in standards of hygiene?

I’ve always done this over email so the staff member doesn’t have to have the awkward face to face confrontation. Also - send the email just before home time so they then don’t have to work paranoid

yes with an older volunteer. turns out he only had a bath and was struggling to get in and out and so wasn't washing. had to get SS involved to get him a seat and eventually a wet room.

In a previous job we had to talk to a staff member about her farting issues. Luckily it went really well and we were all laughing in the end.

I had to tell a roommate his clothes reeked and I said bro I love you too much to let you go around smelling like mildew. I helped him get rid of the smell and told him it's happened to me too

I remember my first week as a manager my senior made me have this conversation with a colleague. She had known about it for months too.

I've had to have this conversation a few times. It wasn't the easiest but the outcomes were always positive.

the first time I had to speak to someone about BO, it was hard. over the years, the words just roll off the tongue, an easy speech I have memorized word by word.

I have had to have this conversation twice at different jobs with people I have managed. It’s hard but with kindness and support both individuals were ok with me speaking to them about it. ❤️

I had to have the same conversation, thought I’d handled it sensitively and the response I got was “so what” and she walked away. 😬

We do a check in every Novemberish (beginning of summer in Australia), a message goes out, everyone who wants one gets a can of deodorant and there’s 3-4 in the bathrooms that get restocked (1)
