They removed the clause where temp HP goes away if the source of the temp HP ends. So casting a spell like 2024 polymorph and then ending the spell keeps the temp HP

Well the first mistake was starting a new rule set at a level that let someone cast a 9th level spell!

pure and simple math :
you can do much better things with a 9th level slot. BUT a 7th level slot still does the magic, since you roll 9 dice. and also with 5th level slot (7 dice) you have very high probabilities that works
