Imagine it’s the middle of summer, both the nights & the ocean are warm, and there a slight blue glow in the waves. So you go for a swim…💦 Immediately you’re surrounded by a bright light as the plankton in the water begin to glow! You think of the Grandmother from Moana, or the glowing forest in Avatar! It’s surreal!! You can see your outline underwater! When you look very close at the light it looks like glowing blue glitter. You see a school of fish swim past and they leave an explosion of glowing trails like a firework going off! Is this real? Are you imagining all this light and color? How is this possible!!!? In warm summer months, in bays of warm ocean water, dinoflagellates will gather. Like many sea creatures, they can emit bioluminescence. We can see it in the breaking waves, or in the trails of boats, and in the warmest months, we can see it along the shore when the moon is darkest. Sometimes the glow is very bright, sometimes it hardly noticeable. It won’t last all year. The first cool weather and they all disperse from the once warm bays. Will you see it one day?
