I’m australian. A punter is someone who loves horse racing or who bets on a footy game so I figured it was like footy and they got kicked across!

Hahaha this is an interesting point. I’m Scottish and if I was to say “I punted…” I would mean kicked it. But yet I have read that line multiple times and never once questioned what it meant.
