There was one summer before the children’s home that I remember as a genuinely happy time. Jerry and I were living with our Aunt Eunice. She was gruff, smoked like a freight train, and “Lord have mercy” was probably said 47 times a day because we drove that woman absolutely nuts. 😂 But we loved her, she loved us, and for however long we were there, we were happy. There was always something hanging over us, though. School was coming, and Jerry and I knew something was going to have to happen. We just didn’t know what. Then Daddy came and told us we were going away to a “school.” It was described almost like summer camp. There would be horses and other kids it would be fun. It wasn’t summer camp…it wasn’t fun. But for us, when we heard this came the immediate question that still gets me every single time I tell this story: “Will Jerry and I be together?” No. I wasn’t scared for myself. Somehow, even as a child, I knew I would figure out how to survive whatever was coming I had done it over and over again. But this time was different, I was scared for my brother. We had been through everything together. He had never been without me, and even though he was older, I had always felt responsible for him. I knew how afraid he would be, and I knew I wasn’t going to be there when he needed me. That part still gets me all these years later. Sorry about that. I never open this phone with the intent to start crying. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Anyway, I tell pieces of our story here and there, but there are so many new people who don’t know where it began or how all the pieces fit together. I keep wondering how I tell the whole thing, from the beginning, in order. Maybe it needs to be a series. Maybe it needs to be a book. I don’t know yet. But this morning, I wanted to tell you about that summer. Because before everything changed for us once again, there really was a little pocket of time when two kids got to just be kids. And I’m grateful we had it. ❤️ #goodmorning #storytime #memories #childhood #childhoodtrauma
