@eduleadership: Something strange is happening with disability accommodations on college campuses, and we need to be able to talk about it.

turns out all the pain I've had my whole life were symptoms of an easy to diagnose physical disability. teachers and doctors brushed of my pain and needs like it was nothing.

when the government launches an investigation to figure out if someone deserves food stamps, it usually costs 3x as much. this is like the same thing. 1/2

I have a college kiddo with autism diagnosis (not diagnosed until college) and he prob doesn’t need extra time but he gets it. What he needs is an accountability coach and univ doesn’t do this well.

I had a combinations in k-12 and it took me forever to get accommodations into my college, you can’t get accommodations without having documentation. And it’s extremely hard to have that.

Yo if we don’t need extra time you know what we do? We turn in our exam and we leave. If they can’t adequately staff accommodations depts then general accomodations are fine.

I had people threatening to take away my cane when I didn’t officially have a diagnosis because…”I’m not disabled”. Actually I am, most people would just never know. I’d much rather the system be 1/2

back in my day us neurospicy folks just quietly failed out rather than get the accommodations we need ☹️

Lucky to get accommodations even if your parents could afford the expensive testing and doctor’s diagnosis. Many schools still won’t do anything useful.

I’ve been to three different colleges and they all require so much documentation.. it takes months and so so much energy to get accommodations- why would someone go through that if they don’t need the

Ummm here in 🇨🇦 we have to have documentation from professionals and those professionals say what the accommodation are needed and then the school does an IEP. We are just getting counted.

I had to spend 1200$ to prove to my university that I did in fact have ADHD, the same ADHD I'd been diagnosed and medicated for for the last six/seven years at that point.

What is the rationale for the LSAT being timed? Is it possible to change the process so accomodations can be streamlined. Since Covid there are in fact more with disabilities.

I agree as a dyslexic 41 person. I remember that my college professor asked me to read out loud. I had the autonomy to say out loud to the entire class “it is hard for me to read out loud”

My oldest is studying in the UK. She had to have a letter from a physician with a diagnosis. They wouldn’t accept any of her IEP paperwork from her high school.

So how do you decide who’s a “faker”? Diagnoses? I didn’t get diagnosed with ADHD until after graduating college. It can be very expensive to get diagnosed with any given disability.

i think more college professors need to educate themselves on concepts like universal design for learning and build accommodations into their classes without anyone having to ask for them

Hey fun fact you can’t get accommodations without either proof of diagnosis or proof of having accommodations from highschool (which you also couldn’t get without proof of diagnosis or accommodations from middle school, which you then couldn’t get without proof of diagnosis or accommodations from elemtary, which you needed proof of diagnosis to get…)

absolutely insane take because even with excessive documentation through official uni services, my profs still don’t have to accommodate me in the way i need/ expressed a need for

also are they 'giving out' more accomodations or are students just more informed of their rights, are more students with disabilities accessing higher education than before, etc theres a lot of reason

So you are just wrong, you cannot just say “I need accommodation” and get it you have to have extensive documentation to even get a meeting about them let alone actually get them
