The House Judiciary Committee voted 18–15, along party lines, on Thursday to advance a resolution to find Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for defying its subpoena to turn over audio recordings of President Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur. The vote, which sends the measure to the House floor, came hours after the White House asserted executive privilege over the tapes, a move designed to shield the attorney general from prosecution. Mr. Hur found the president improperly handled classified material from his time as vice president but declined to bring charges, citing as one of his reasons his assessment that a jury would likely find the president to be “a well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” Republicans have seized on Mr. Hur’s characterization of the president’s mental acuity and say the American people deserve to hear the audio, not simply the transcript of the interview that has already been publicly released. “President Biden is asserting executive privilege for the same reason we need the audio recordings — they offer a unique perspective,” Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) said. Democrats and the White House say Republicans are abusing their authority to try to get the tapes to use them for political attack ads. “The absence of a legitimate need for the audio recordings lays bare your likely goal — to chop them up, distort them and use them for partisan political purposes,” White House Counsel Edward Siskel wrote in a letter to Rep. Jordan and Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY). #houseofrepresentatives #congress #merrickgarland #joebiden #cspan
