The current body of research DOES NOT support the (absolute) claim that longer rest times are superior to shorter rest times for hypertrophy. The studies that show longer rest periods are superior for hypertrophy did not “volume load equate” between rest intervals - meaning that they did the same amount of sets with longer vs shorter rest. In reality, when people rest less, they can do more sets - and this additional set volume closes the gap between the muscle growth response we see between rest times. We also have data comparing “drop set” and “myo-rep” methods to traditional straight sets. While rest is drastically reduced with these methods, the data shows these strategies are just as effective for muscle growth as traditional straight-set methods with longer rest periods (this domain of research is still in its infancy, though). So the summary is this: if you rest less, do more sets with the extra time you have. If you rest more, each of your sets will be more stimulative on a per-set basis - but it doesn’t seem you’ll be making better gains this way. Pick the method you like more and which is appropriate given the context of the exercise and the constraints of the exercise. Some exercises are likely better suited to longer rest periods, while others are better suited to shorter periods (or no rest at all).
