if you're actually looking to set up a robust comms system considered gmrs. The license is cheap. there's no test and you can put together a real radio system for your family. radios are cheap too

this is a ham radio. it requires a license to talk on. you may listen. not push the talk button. fines can be upto 10k usd

There are zero channels that you can use on that radio without a license from the FCC. Transmitting on it at all could subject you to a substantial fine.

Just get your Technician license. It's only $35. Maybe the local club charges $10 to take the test, but it's usually free. You'll learn enough to actually know how to use this thing.

This isn’t a walkie talkie tho it’s an unregulated HAM handset. The harmonics it gives off are terrible and for transmission without a license would only b allowed in an emergency

while yes it is a radio that legally need a license to operate, I'm gonna repeat that for OP it's a RADIO that needs a licensed operator to transmit, nobody's gonna do squat outside of stop talking to you if you're not licensed
