Late winter is a great time to start thinking about a mini greenhouse repurposed from old windows. I’ve grown seedlings with a grow light for years and—trust me—the hardening off process (getting them prepped for outdoor transplanting into the garden) is such a long effort and is tedious. Allowing seedlings to get established in a greenhouse shortens the transition immensely. I had a bunch of old windows already on-hand in my old barn that were leftover from previous homeowner window renovations. By connecting them together and adding hinges to one side with a handle, I created a mini seed starting greenhouse in less than one hour. I added boards across the width of the interior to hold seedling trays. Those little L-brackets that hold shelving are great for this as seedling trays should be pretty light weight. Use a different approach for heavier pots. As for the roof, an angle is required to help with water runoff. To create pitch while simultaneously offering ventilation, I simply added a header board to the topside of the back window, (a 2x3” board to be exact) that raised the height. This allows for a change in elevation of the roof, and provides the required ventilation. I made this greenhouse about 3 seasons ago. Still going strong! A great upcycle, in my opinion, for 5 old windows.
