the best puzzles are where they have to literally do nothing and just wait for it to solve because it's on a timer and interacting with it resets the timer.

Whenever I make a puzzle for my players, I first run it by my 8 y/o. If he can solve it in 5mins, I know I'm about to present them with a solid half hour of bickering and deep thought.

the puzzle genuinely is either unsolvable, or literally just playing tic-tac-toe. regardless, the party fails at both until the dm opens it for them or lets the party break it open brute via force.

My players caught word the bbeg was looking for them and after their lives so to be careful of any info they came across. Over the course of 2 sessions they were approached by multiple explicitly evil, im talking cartoon villain, type characters. They gave them info on a “secret passage into his lair. A clear trap. They were obsessed in “cracking the code” of clear directions to a fake side entrance. They deciphered runes on the door that spelled out “it’s a trap” after deciphering each one the mountain shook more and more making it clear what was about to happen but they assured each other it was the door readying to open. After deciphering the last letter the mountain side collapsed and almost tpk’ed the party. I never got to add actual puzzles to that campaign.

It honestly took our party a whole session just to get across a bridge with 3 guards on it. Then the DM put another bridge in our way and it took a whole 'nother session to get pass it.
