Under UK law and the UN Refugee Convention, claiming asylum is a lawful right, not a crime. While entering the country without permission is an offence under section 24 of the Immigration Act 1971, the law explicitly provides an exemption for refugees: Parliament established a separate legal framework (via section 18(3) of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 and section 37 of the Nationality and Borders Act 2022).
