Social media can be amazing in small doses—it helps us connect, learn, and even unwind. But spending too much time on socials can dysregulate your emotions by overstimulating your brain’s reward pathways, creating a cycle of dopamine highs and crashes: - Excessive blue light exposure disrupts melatonin production, which not only wrecks your sleep but also impacts mood regulation and immune function. - Constant scrolling keeps your nervous system on high alert, contributing to elevated cortisol levels, stress, and eventually burnout. - Emotionally, it fosters feelings of inadequacy and comparison by constantly exposing you to curated, idealized content, which can erode self-esteem over time. - And ironically, while social media is designed to connect us, overuse often leads to isolation and loneliness, replacing genuine relationships with superficial online interactions. These factors, together, create a perfect storm of mental and physical dysregulation, harming your overall well-being in ways you might not immediately notice. If you find it challenging, like me, then start small. Make a list of non-screen activities you love—painting, reading, playing cards, gardening, journaling, Warhammer, knitting, piano, singing, or anything that sparks joy. And start actively scheduling them into your day, especially during times when you’d usually be doom-scrolling. By shifting your focus, you can reduce overstimulation, balance your dopamine levels, and bring your nervous system back into a state of calm. For me, I’m challenging myself to shut off my phone from 8:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m., five days a week for the next 6 weeks. It’s going to be tough, but I know it’s worth it for my mental and physical health -- because my screen time is out of control. So, what's out of control for you? And what's one small step you could take to create more balance? #stress #stressmanagement #StressRelief #anxiety #anxietyrelief #overstimulated #overstimulation #screentime #dopamineaddiction #dopamine #nervoussystem #nervoussystemregulation
