@missclairebenjamin: 🚨 Handling the silent treatment 👇 Firstly the perspective shown in this video does not apply to emotionally manipulative people who use the silent treatment to gain control and power. The perspective shown in this video applies to the large proportion of people who use passive-aggressive communication because they don’t feel able to communicate what is bothering them directly. This can be for various different reasons for example fear of conflict, emotional immaturity, lack of skills to communicate assertively and not feeling safe to be honest. By modelling direct respectful and open communication yourself sometimes this can shift the dynamic. These sorts of phrases can be helpful: “I’ve noticed that you haven’t been responding to my emails or text messages and wanted to check in to see if everything’s ok?” If they respond with everything is fine try: “I can sense that everything isn’t fine. If I have unintentionally said or done something that has caused you offence it would be good to talk about it so we can resolve it” The goal is to ensure you have shown up to the interaction with integrity and emotional maturity. If they decide to continue this behaviour then that’s when boundaries come in. 📌 Please be mindful that the approach shown in this video will not fit every situation so always use your own judgement and adapt it to suit your own circumstances. I need to work on this. I sometimes do this. It stems from being ignored a lot and dismissed when I was younger. Thanks for this video. It gives me something to reflect on.

silent treatment is all I've been given my entire life, family or friends so I get really triggered when I face this at work

I give people the silent treatment inadvertently sometimes. It’s not to be passive aggressive, it’s because I’m dealing with too much and can’t be arsed with the extra hassle.

tried this, got the manager involved and they didn't pursue it, so i started documentation as outlined the ehb and then my lead who's the issue started accusing me of poor performance, hostility etc

Some employees are not passive aggressive, they just aren’t in a safe space to address concerns with their manager

Really love how you said you would follow up with a meeting the next day. This gives the colleague time to reflect and prepare what they want to talk about.

You're 100% correct , listening is key. I'll never forget managements faces when I retired early nd they realised I wasn't a poor person😳

Oh boy ain’t that the truth. I’m putting meetings in my manager’s diary now and follow up with them by chat to ensure they accept, making the consequences of not having the meeting clear.

I grew up believing that the silent treatment was normal behaviour. I only found out it wasn't when I became an adult. It takes a while to unlearn patterns acquired in childhood.
