@seannalewanyj: As with most things there is some gray area involved here since it does depend on your exact definition of "skinny fat". If you're thin but with only a very small bit of extra fat then bulking first isn't necessarily "wrong" if putting on overall size is your definite top priority. Just be aware that once you enter into a surplus, fat gain is going to be a one way street and you won't be getting any leaner until you shift gears later on and drop into a deficit. From what I've seen over the years and having viewed literally thousands of "should I bulk or cut" photos from guys who identify as skinny fat, cutting first makes the most sense in the majority of cases. Fat loss is a much faster process pound for pound compared to muscle growth, and you can probably gain at least some muscle throughout your initial cutting phase as well. You'll look better, feel better, and as Joel mentions in his video, you'll also put yourself into a much better position to carry out a longer term bulk once that cutting phase has ended. #Fitness #gym #workout #bodybuilding #buildmuscle
Cutting and bulking is a false dichotomy though given that beginners can gain muscle very well on maintenance. I would eat at maintenance and train before cutting in most cases.

I was skinny fat when I started and I didn't have a clue about anything on food or whatever, I just ate and did calisthenics, and a year later I got 2 dumbells and a year later in a gym(now)

I think this just depends on their goals. I think a very moderate cut is pretty good though because you will be gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time.
