Basically "digital native" was BS. You need to teach people skills, and computer skills need to be taught

There’s two sectors of people who don’t know how to use a computer… old people and younger generation. Computers have become so simple it’s gone the other way and become they can’t use computers the way we grew up learning. At least younger gen are willing to learn though, cause even though I have a good grasp I still google stuff and I have never had a younger person complain when I try and teach them something

I get so upset thinking about how dumbed down computing has gotten for Gen Z and Gen Alpha. They truly haven't been taught the basics of computing

As a graphic designer, not having a meticulous system for folders and file names would absolutely drive me crazy

As a software engineer, allowing spaces in file names is one of the worst decisions in the world. It’s up there with integrating onedrive into windows by default and the windows server.

It’s always been my theory that millennials growing up seeing the evolution of modern computing and technology are actually more tech literate than Gen Zs because we know the building block of tech

I work for the school system and they’re taking away local storage!! We’re only allowed to save things on the cloud now…

Students have only been taught how to use app based tech (iPads and Chromebooks), they were never taught to use regular desktop computers or laptops. Schools should bring back computer skills classes for elementary!

Folders are also a fundamentally terrible way to store things, based on an abstraction of a sprawling storage room with tons of cabinets and file folders. We don’t need that.

I'm a librarian at a University and when I tell students to save their doc in 2 places for safety (in the cloud & on a device) they look shocked...like they aren't even thinking of saving.

It’a not just about organization. My students don’t know basic keyboard shortcuts, they don’t know word processing toolbar features (italics, spacing), and they rely on Google to access ALL websites.

There is a difference between independent work at school and collaborative work in an office. You can't assume your coworker will find your document via search. It DOES matter.

It’s funny everyone complaining about Google drive, but sending an email with a spreadsheet that everyone modifies and renames to version 2, 3, Final, Final with edits, Final Final…

They used to teach us how to use EVERY feature of excel/word/etc, coding/building websites in school. It was taken out of the curriculum a few years later when my sister went through the same grades.

This is exactly the reason why there are people that recommend against starting using a bloated IDE like vs code, and instead using the terminal. There is nothing you cannot do using terminal tools(1)

I'm older Gen Z and while I do think I have an above average understanding of Computers for my age group, it's disturbing how little I actually know. I never knew why I don't use spaces in file names.

I think the scariest part of this isn't that students aren't learning about basic computer functions, but that they're soloing themselves into only knowing how *Google* products work, so they'll be dependent on Google for everything rather than learn how to use other products and methods

you can use spaces in naming conventions in Web design and programming, where did you get the notion that you can't? %20 is there literally for that reason
