I agree with some of what he is saying, but I think too much awareness in the way he is defining it can lead to rumination. Sometimes distractions are good. It's the mind's way of protecting itself.

As a person with ADHD, I often need stimulus to occupy several of the noisier and more unfocused channels that never turn off. . I typically have 3 to 7 channels of thought at any given time. So, to focus, I need to distract several of them so that my primary channel can stay on task and maximize productivity.
