Are #China and the #USA going to go to war? Are we one rash moment away from a terrible nuclear annihilation? Well, according to the #Greek historian Thucydides, things are not looking good. #Thucydides is considered to be one of the fathers of #history as a discipline. In his great work, The History of the Peloponnesian War, he uses the events of his day to present certain geopolitical principles that apply to power politics throughout all time. Back then, #Sparta had been the dominant power of the region — what's called a hegemon — and #Athens was the young upstart rivalling Sparta's position. According to Thucydides, the prevailing power will always clash with a rising one. In international relations, this is known as ‘realism.’ This is the idea that all nations are self-interested. They will kill, steal, and wage war to protect the interests of their nation and their citizens. This sees #war as a tool to pre-emptively protect your security. We all want to be the biggest bully in the playground because the biggest bully has security. If we look at history, we can find many examples to support Thucydides point. In 2012, Graham Allison coined the phrase ‘Thucydides Trap.’ In his book, Allison argued that of the 16 major historical examples of a rising power meeting and existing power, it's led to war 12 times. And so, Allison argues that America, as the current hegemon, and China, as the rising one, are on track for a highly likely and apocalyptic clash. So, let's just hope that Thucydides was wrong. #politics #politicalphilosophy #philosophy
