@domesticblisters: Replying to @Kaitykait this is about people getting angry at me for their own cognitive distortions. #strugglecare #trauma #parenting
This. I'm a therapist and getting folks to both empathize with and hold others accountable at the same time unlocks so much.

When I did my 4th step resentments, I had 3 lines on my dad and 4 pages on my mom. My sponsor said, “Sometimes it’s only safe to be angry at one parent at a time.” Took a while, but I got there.

YES! People and situations are very rarely black or white / good or bad! I can hold two/multiple things to be true at the same time (dialectics).

💯 💯 💯 Yes. The black and white framing is so unhelpful.

I'm a single mom with the absent ex husb. who gets to be praised for popping in every 6 months; I'm also doing my best to not be like my mom whom I'm no contact with. I knew what you meant.

It is an objective fact that mothers do more domestic labour and childrearing disproportionately to men, it is a lot of weight to carry in late stage capitalism where women have to work too

My mother had a very rough childhood *and* she’s a grown ass adult & is responsible for her actions. For example.

There's a wider cultural problem that Christian societies have a good person/bad person model. It's neither useful not correct.

I have so much sympathy for my Mum. I was also pissed at her for years until she took accountability.
I have empathy for my dad, and I remain furious as he continues to deny responsibility.

It’s how “good” people justify doing so much harm. I can’t have done harm, I’m on THIS side of the binary of good and evil.

at this point, I'm convinced you could get online and say you love the way cats sleep, and a loud band of weirdos would descend to remind you that they are bird murderers 😅

There’s also an epidemic of people thinking if something they encounter doesn’t include their experience, they are being harmed.

100% just like I can be mad for the trauma my mom caused while still being proud of the cycles she broke and also empathize that had she had info to do better she would have. Nothing is black & white

You can be upset that you didn’t have your needs met while simultaneously having compassion for the reason those needs weren’t met.

this. my parents were both shit for their own reasons. but I recognize the way my dad would try to weaponize my mom's issues and take no accountability for himself.
