Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) fired a warning shot at Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Friday by filing a motion to vacate the chair that could lead to a vote on his ouster. “I filed the motion to vacate today, but it’s more of a warning and a pink slip,” she told reporters. “It’s time for us to go through the process, take our time and find a new speaker of the House that will stand with Republicans and our Republican majority, instead of standing with the Democrats.” As of now, the resolution has not been filed as “privileged,” which would force a floor vote on whether to remove the speaker. Speaker Johnson assumed the gavel in October after his predecessor, former Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), became the first speaker in history to be removed by a vote of the House. Rep. Greene filed her motion as the House was on the verge of passing a $1.2 trillion six-bill minibus to fund the government through the rest of FY 2024. Significantly more Democrats (185) than Republicans (101) voted in favor, following a trend for key legislation in the 118th Congress. And in a blow to the speaker, a majority of the Republican conference (112–101) voted against the legislation, with many being upset they were not given enough time to review the large package that grouped multiple bills together. Republican hardliners have grown increasingly frustrated with the speaker in recent months, but it’s not clear whether there would be enough votes to remove him. If all Democrats vote for his removal, Speaker Johnson could afford to lose just two of his own members. It’s possible enough Democrats could back the speaker on such a vote, but it would also be problematic for the speaker to survive with Democratic votes. #marjorietaylorgreene #mtg #speakerofthehouse #mikejohnson #cspan
