Kamala Harris on Thursday tried to find a middle ground on the most divisive issue of the Democratic convention: the war between Israel and Hamas. “I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself,” she said. She then went on to talk anew about the “devastating” damage and “innocent lives lost” in Gaza. Only after hostages are released and a cease-fire takes hold, she said, can Palestinians “realize their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination.” Tap the link in our bio for a full analysis of Harris’s speech. #DNC #Harris #2024Election
NBC News' Richard Engel explains how disagreements that occur as the Gaza ceasefire deal plays out may cause it to unravel.
Kamala Harris used her acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday to present herself as a pragmatic leader who could unite all Americans behind a "new way forward," painting her opponent, Donald Trump, as a dangerous and "unserious man" whose election would alter the foundation of American democracy. At each turn of the nearly 40-minute address, she warned that Trump's behavior belied a serious and substantive threat to Americans, whether they are seeking access to reproductive health care, concerned about the safety and stability of diplomatic relationships or worried about the flow of immigrants across the nation's southern border or about the health of democracy. Tap the link in our bio for more on what Harris said in her speech.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) fired a warning shot at Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Friday by filing a motion to vacate the chair that could lead to a vote on his ouster. “I filed the motion to vacate today, but it’s more of a warning and a pink slip,” she told reporters. “It’s time for us to go through the process, take our time and find a new speaker of the House that will stand with Republicans and our Republican majority, instead of standing with the Democrats.” As of now, the resolution has not been filed as “privileged,” which would force a floor vote on whether to remove the speaker. Speaker Johnson assumed the gavel in October after his predecessor, former Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), became the first speaker in history to be removed by a vote of the House. Rep. Greene filed her motion as the House was on the verge of passing a $1.2 trillion six-bill minibus to fund the government through the rest of FY 2024. Significantly more Democrats (185) than Republicans (101) voted in favor, following a trend for key legislation in the 118th Congress. And in a blow to the speaker, a majority of the Republican conference (112–101) voted against the legislation, with many being upset they were not given enough time to review the large package that grouped multiple bills together. Republican hardliners have grown increasingly frustrated with the speaker in recent months, but it’s not clear whether there would be enough votes to remove him. If all Democrats vote for his removal, Speaker Johnson could afford to lose just two of his own members. It’s possible enough Democrats could back the speaker on such a vote, but it would also be problematic for the speaker to survive with Democratic votes. #marjorietaylorgreene #mtg #speakerofthehouse #mikejohnson #cspan
