Can’t get your eye to stop twitching? Aka Myokymia In order to learn to fix this annoying issue, we need to first talk about what can cause it. If both eyes twitch simultaneously then it’s important to see an eye care professional, as there may be a more serious medical underlying issue. If it’s just one eye at a time then keep reading! CAUSES: *STRESS* This may be subconscious but when there are big life changes, changes to your daily routine or anticipation of a change, that could cause subconscious stress and anxiety. Easy fix.. stop stressing right? Easier said than done. Try to focus on the things that are consistent in your life still and that you have control over to help alleviate some of that stress. Also seek counseling if you’re having difficulty managing this on your own. This one is sometimes not in our control so keep reading to find out what is! *CAFFEINE* One of the most common causes are a high intake of caffeine compared to your normal dose can which cause the muscles in your eye to spasm. Decreasing the intake back to your baseline or completely avoiding caffeine until this resolves is the best course of action! *FATIGUE* Lack of sleep can cause all sorts of abnormal responses. One of them being myokymia. Lack of sleep and rest will lead to an increase in caffeine intake (which is already a known suspect for myokymia) and this becomes a vicious cycle that may be difficult to break. Rest is important for many reasons! ADDITIONAL TREATMENTS: *TONIC WATER* Tonic water is proven to help reduce the frequency and occupancy of myokymia. Tonic water contains quinine which is known to be a somewhat effective muscle relaxant. *COLD COMPRESSES* You can use a cold metal spoon, an ice pack, a cold compress or do an ice bath for your face for short term relief!
