"Hollywood Dreaming" was released on this day eight years ago. It was the first collaboration between Gus and his friend Gabe, as well as the first single Gus shared in February 2017—just days after CASTLES II. That month proved to be very productive for him, living out in Los Angeles and creating a plethora of music with a tight-knit group of like-minded artists. At the end of January, he had announced that he had begun working on his debut album, and “Hollywood Dreaming” emerged as one of several standalone tracks from this exciting and fruitful period in his life. Gus and Gabe made Hollywood Dreaming shortly before dropping it on February 9, 2017. Gus was residing in Echo Park at the time, and on the same day—in the early hours—he filmed a music video for Benz Truck, Pt. 2 at his apartment. Hollywood Dreaming was uploaded to SoundCloud with a cover photo of Gus, Gabe, and Gus’s grandmother in the living room of the Echo Park apartment on February 3—around the same time Gus got his EXIT LIFE tattoo on his back. He was immersed in his craft, enjoying time with his collaborators, and feeling particularly inspired. That February alone, Gus created several songs with Smokeasac that would later appear on Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, played multiple shows, and filmed several music videos—including one for Hollywood Dreaming with Gabe. The footage for this music video was recorded by Miggy over three separate days: February 20, February 23, and March 11. On February 20, Gus and Gabe filmed part of the video together in Echo Park and, later that night, recorded their next collaboration, Spine. Three days later, they ventured into East Los Angeles with Miggy to film more, and finally—over two weeks later—they captured the last footage on Hollywood Boulevard, along the Walk of Fame, and in front of the Hotel Roosevelt. This song and its video serve as odes not only to Gus’s creative connection with L.A. but also to a pivotal period in his career. He was enjoying himself, proud of the work he was doing with his friends, and excited for what lay ahead—including his first European tour and the release of his debut album.
