Wojtek (1942–1963) was a Syrian brown bear who became the mascot and an enlisted soldier of the Polish Army’s 22nd Artillery Supply Company during the Second World War. 🐻🇵🇱 Born in Iran, he was adopted as a cub by Polish soldiers in 1942. 🌍👶 He quickly became a favorite of the unit, accustomed to human company, where soldiers fed him fruit, honey, and even beer and cigarettes, which he often imitated smoking. 🍯🍺🚬 To allow him to officially travel with the unit, Wojtek was enlisted as a soldier with the rank of private, later promoted to corporal. 🎖️📜 He is most famous for his role in the Battle of Monte Cassino (1944), where he assisted by carrying crates of ammunition and mortar shells, calming soldiers with his presence amid combat. 💥📦🪖 After the war, Wojtek was transferred with his company to Scotland. 🏴🌲 Following the unit’s demobilization in 1947, he was moved to Edinburgh Zoo, where he lived until his death in 1963. 🦉🏛️ Wojtek remains a symbol of courage and camaraderie, remembered as “the most unusual veteran of World War II.” 🌟🕊️ His story continues to inspire and is commemorated by monuments in both Poland and Scotland. 🗿🇵🇱🏴 #HistoryTime #militaryhistory #wojtek #truestory #education
