By high school, he has zero friends and a phone contact list consisting solely of family members. When Hachiman writes an essay mocking youth and social relationships, his teacher forces him to join the Service Club — a club dedicated to helping students solve their problems. The club is run by Yukino Yukinoshita, a beautiful but brutally honest girl just as isolated as Hachiman, and later joined by Yui Yuigahama, a cheerful girl who feels indebted to him after he was hit by a car saving her dog. As the trio takes on requests, Hachiman employs self-destructive methods. He willingly becomes the villain, sacrifices his reputation, and solves problems by taking all the damage himself, believing "no one gets hurt" as long as he bears the pain. Academically, he is a lopsided genius — ranking 3rd in the entire grade in literature but scoring 9 out of 100 in math. His favorite foods include Max Coffee and honey-roasted peanuts. Over the course of the series, Hachiman learns that his self-sacrificing approach hurts the people who care about him. He slowly breaks free from his "loner" shell and, in the finale, confesses to Yukino — a quiet, mature acknowledgment that he wants to share his future with her.
