@skellicose: Replying to @Rekcahdab Part 1. (We really only started hiring Congressional aides when the House stopped expanding and the districts got gigantic). #constitution #moneyinpolitics #gerrymandering #democracy #House #PermanentApportionmentActof1929 #apportionment #history #washington #franklin #philadephia
Do you have a copy of any of this in documentation?

if we were using that rule, the House of Representatives would be unmanageable. We would have over 11,000 reps. That would be ridiculous.

A House seat should not be larger than the population of the smallest State.

Wow, so would reforming House representation also help make the electoral college more representative of the popular vote?

At 30,000 you might actually know your representative or be able to speak to them in person.

Setting the ratio around the mean number of voters would triple the number of representatives. Would love to see it.

Would definitely water down the house of Representatives and make it way harder for corporations to buy votes.

I have more than one friend who I rant about the permanent apportionment act with at least two or three times a week. Nice to see someone else bring it up.

Very interesting. So if we had the ratio of 30,000 per representative and we would have 11,133 US representatives.

I can’t even imagine having that kind of access to my representative. I lived in SF for 20 yrs and my board of supervisors district had 80k constituents.

There is a research paper on the “best” representational size, but it is looking at small countries whereas the US is so large that it makes me wonder if that comparison is appropriate.

Yes! Setting a limit on congresspeople only benefits and gives more power to incumbents (and donors).

So by George Washington numbers the house of representatives would be 11,000? I didn't know if that's genius or insane
