Basicamente, são formados por queratina (proteína que confere resistência, elasticidade e impermeabilidade ao fio) e células mortas compactadas da epiderme. Os pelos nascem no fundo do folículo piloso e são constituídos por duas partes: a raiz implantada na derme (camada intermediária da pele localizada logo abaixo da epiderme) e a haste, porção que se projeta acima da superfície da pele. Pelo encravado é um distúrbio que pode incomodar homens e mulheres, crianças e adultos.  Nos homens, a região da barba – rosto, pescoço e nuca – costuma ser a mais afetada. Nas mulheres, pernas, axilas e virilha são as áreas mais vulneráveis. O problema ocorre com mais frequência, com os pelos mais grossos e encaracolados, principalmente se a pessoa tiver poros estreitos ou cicatrizes na pele.
