Inkinsela yaseMgundundlovu is a classic Zulu novel by Prof Sibusiso Nyembezi, published in 1961. It tells the story of a con man coming from Pietermaritzburg and trying to cheat the locals in rural KwaZulu-Natal. Nyembezi was born in KwaZulu-Natal in 1919. He was a novelist, poet, scholar, teacher and editor. He was also a lecturer in Bantu studies at the University of the Witwatersrand (1949). He also taught at the University of Fort Hare, only to resign along with other colleagues in 1959 to protest against the implementation of the Bantu Education Act. Inkinsela yaseMgungundlovu achieved international recognition when it was selected as one of the top 100 Best Books of African Literature in the 20th Century. Six of Prof Nyembezi’s Classics have been in print for over 50 years- these include Zulu Proverbs, Uhlelo LwesiZulu, Izibongo Zamakhosi, Inkinsela yaseMgungundlovu, Compact Zulu/English Dictionary, and Inqolobane yeSizwe.
