We just installed a “new to us” freight elevator and folks have questions about it. This elevator was made by the Otis Elevator Company. Their name is stenciled at least a dozen times on various components. This elevator is not original to our building, there was no type of lift at all in our place originally. We did modify the elevator a bit to better work in our space. The platform was originally 13 feet long and seven feet wide. We shortened it to 9 feet long. This elevator was found, still in operation, in an old print shop in McKinney, TX. Our buddy blacksmithtools found it for us about two years after we initially asked him to be on the lookout for some type of lift. As you can imagine, things like this don’t come up for sale often! Andrew procured the elevator for us and disassembled it on site and it was delivered to us a few days later. This was back in 2019 before we had even started the flooring and roof work on our building. Fast forward to 2024. It took a few months of head scratching, heavy lifting, and nerve wracking effort but we got it installed and operational in its new home! We’ve had it installed for over a month now and the difference this thing makes is mind blowing. We can now transport equipment and materials from floor to floor with ease. No more trekking upstairs with heavy loads! It takes about 3-4 minutes to fully raise/lower the platform when loaded. Because of the counterweight system, it doesn’t take a lot of effort to move. This is probably massive overkill for our space, but that’s fine by me!! We do plan to add railing around the opening on the second floor for safety, we had to finish our flooring first before that could happen. This elevator will also be freight only. It’s not a passenger elevator and will not be used as such . . We make things like they used to . . #txheritage #otiselevator #castiron #vintage #antique #benchoffbuilding #menardville
