As someone who graduated HS and enrolled at UCLA at 17 I don’t understand it either.

Had a kid at my school do this. His dad was 5’4 and his mom 4’9 and they held him back so he would be bigger than other kids😭😂

If they’re legitimately D1/pro athlete potential caliber that one year should not make the difference.

I dealt w/this for YEARS. Parents holding back 6th gr boys. Can you imagine how boring it is to repeat 6th gr when you had at least a B average the first time? The behavior challenges were INTENSE.

My son can either be 4/5 in K or 5/6 and I’m gonna go with 5/6. I wouldn’t make him repeat kindergarten I would just start it correctly 😭

This isn’t happening in just Texas. Indiana here and I’ve watched some boys graduate at 20 years old for that athletic ‘advantage.’ It’s insane

I was told by a coach if was in my son’s best interest to hold him back, around 4th grade. He was a straight A student. Absolutely not..

it blew my mind when I moved here that they prioritize sports and athleticism over amazing academics, arts and music.

Exactly- it's ridiculous. Now, I held both my August bday boys back, but that's because they were not ready to sit and focus yet! (Or ever, really 🙄) wish I'd understood more about adhd then

I graduated at 17 because my birthday is in September and went to private school for kindergarten and 1st grade. Learned how to read early but I think maybe another year older would have been good.

I was 5’ 6” at 16. Thank God I was held back. Grew to 6’ over the summer. Went from 9th grade B team to starting in 10th grade. I know. Yea for me. Just a good example of letting a boy mature.
