@historyexplained_: Forgotten Empires: The Khmer Empire 👹 Did you know The Khmer Empire once ruled one of the largest and most powerful kingdoms in Southeast Asia, but today, it’s almost forgotten? At its peak, the Khmer Empire stretched across modern-day Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, ruling over millions of people. The empire’s capital, Angkor, was home to the stunning Angkor Wat temple—still the largest religious monument in the world today. The Khmer were masters of engineering, building vast irrigation systems and complex temples. But after centuries of power, the empire mysteriously declined in the 15th century. Many historians believe a combination of environmental changes, war, and internal strife led to its downfall. The ruins of Angkor stand as a reminder of the empire’s former glory, but the full story of why it collapsed remains a mystery. Want to uncover more forgotten empires?
