My American husband keeps trying to jump into our Korean conversations—nice try, Dada! 🤣🤣🤣 Here are some tips for some of you asking how we did the bilingual education! We’ve exposed our daughter to Korean since birth. Foundational language development happens rapidly in the first two years, but exposure before six months is critical for establishing the brain's language processing pathways. Even before she could talk, I constantly spoke to her in Korean. Spending time with my parents around her also made a big difference. If your parents aren’t available, other family members or a nanny who speaks the target language can be a huge help. ⭐ I consistently speak Korean to my child, no matter what. If she responds in English, I don’t react, but when she speaks Korean back to me, I respond with enthusiasm and happiness. ⭐ I actively connect with Korean families here in the US. This helps her hear how adults interact in Korean, which is essential. Children learn a lot from observing conversations in different contexts, linking what they see to language. There’s only so much they can pick up from interactions between just mom and baby or among kids. ⭐ Also, I read Korean books to her at bedtime. I expose her only to Korean media. I brought back Korean-speaking toys from Korea. I’ll be sharing more soon about the Korean language toys, books, and media that have worked for us!
