@professor.steph: Replying to @greenbean helllooo! I have ~so many~ thoughts on this. Here are a few :) #MentalHealth #therapy #therapytiktok #therapist #therapistsontiktok #mentalhealthmatters #fyp #gradschool #grad #psychology
I think all of this is true but I also think that ppl enter into therapy with unreasonable expectations. Healing isn’t linear and having unreasonable expectations sets ya up for being disappointed

LCSW here- I’ve never understood why more modalities aren’t taught in school. Like we learn theory but not practice

Counseling Grad school was sooo disappointing. It turned me off from the whole field. Good training is hard to come by

The hard thing about this is- when is enough enough? I think a lot of therapist also get trapped into the cycle of feeling unworthy when generally

(Good) therapist have specialties, but without the titles, like orthopedist, gynecologist, dermatologist, etc. AND, some think they can treat anything - just like some bad primary care docs.

the best thing my ERP therapist did was tell me we had hit a wall with care and I needed someone specialized in trauma. working with a PE therapist now, and it's so different and feels like /1

There definitely needs to be more standardized education in counseling grad school and for practicum sites. The amount of individuals I witnessed graduate with minimal therapeutic training was insane.

There’s also an aspect that not every therapist’s approach is going to be a good and effective match for each person. Me not being the right therapist for someone doesn’t necessarily mean I’m bad.

Not to mention some trainings are not worth the money. So the time doing the research to make sure it is worth ur time and money.

And it's like one of the only professions where we're really not able to shadow or see how it's done + everybody is unique there's no one answer

The system and low pay is also a problem. Even private practitioners are spread too thin. You have to stock up on clients and have little prep time.

A few years ago, I had a therapist tell me I’d start dating and getting matches on apps when mercury came out of retrograde in a week … bc that’s what happened to her friend

I had a therapist who said talking to me was like “pulling teeth” and instead of trying to make me feel more comfortable to open up she shamed me for it.

I would kill for the right therapist. So discouraging. It takes a lot to find one then it doesn’t work out which makes u want to just give up. Which I have.

As someone who triggered a couple therapists before becoming one, I love the conversation around encouraging clients not to take it personally, and trying someone new

I had a therapist that told me I had BPD and completely missed the fact that what actually happened was a trauma bond with an emotional abuser and I couldn’t break it.

I feel like sometimes not addressing their own traumas can have an impact on care. Sometimes people show up in the office with the same traumas the therapist is struggling with. Ego is also a factor.
