What to do when someone cries during feedback👇 As a manager, when someone gets upset during feedback, it can be hard to know how to respond. No one teaches us things like this. Due to the discomfort of someone crying your instinct might be to apologise or even soften what we’ve said. This can be problematic though as it means you don’t discuss the important issue you were giving them feedback about. Crying also isn’t a bad thing- it allows us to release emotions and can allow the root of the issue to be surfaced. It’s healthy to show emotion. Tears might be a sign someone is overwhelmed, going through something privately, or deeply cares about what’s being discussed. Crying is also the body’s way of regulating in a difficult moment. So instead of backing away from the conversation, our role as a manager is to stay grounded, hold space with compassion and resist the urge to jump into fixing mode. Offering a tissue or a glass of water can give the person a moment to breathe, and us a chance to regulate too, if needed. We might also say something like: “Take your time, and let me know when you’re ready to talk more.” This keeps the conversation open, respectful, and safe. 💬 Have you ever been on either side of this? Share your experiences or tips in the comments so we can learn from each other 👀 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and won’t fit every situation. Use your own judgement and adapt it to your context. ➕ Follow for more tips on handling tricky situations at work #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #emotionalintelligence #corporatelife #difficultconversations #communicationskills #MentalHealth #managertips
