@sh2aa7: In 1981, a Single F-14 Downed 3 MiGs With Just 1 Missile. On January 7th, 1981, an Iranian F-14 Tomcat was told about four unidentified aircraft approaching an Iranian island called Kharg in the Persian Gulf. They were Iraqi MiG-23 Floggers, coming to hit an oil rig close to the island. The jets were flying at 2,000 feet despite nighttime conditions. The F-14 detected them using AN/AWG-9 radar. At 56 miles out, the F-14’s radar intercept officer, or RIO, suggested targeting the middle plane to potentially damage the other three in the formation. The F-14 then launched an AIM-54 Phoenix missile, which traveled at 3000+ miles an hour, reaching its target in 66 seconds. The missile’s 61 kg payload proved devastating, taking down three planes and damaging the fourth. Debris from the MiGs was found on the Kharg island. #fighterjet #usa #usairforce #military
