tbf as a linguistics student, we tend to refer to it now as ssbe (meaning southern standard british english) because rp is the posher version and very few people

I'm from Surrey and had to tone down mine over the years because it made people automatically see me as stuck up but it always resurfaces on the phone at work 😂

A common side effect of vocal professions is the more you know about linguistic anatomy and mechanics the more common it is to have what I call a floating accent, where you are kind of drifting

I have an rp accent and have done since I was a child, now I have picked up and adapted my accent more but I still get called ‘posh’ when reading because that’s when I forget to adapt 😂

Same here. My mum was from London but brought up to "talk proper" (or as she called it, her "telephone voice"). To add to that, I grew up in West Sussex, so I'm very RP.

Always got called posh at uni, grew up with parents working as a teacher and a cleaner, and you best believe I was getting that maximum student loan + a low income bursaries!! I definitely softened

Yes! I remember countless people telling me I sounded ‘posh’ as a child , and then I moved to London for uni and it dropped a bit but still very RP (I’m from the Isle of Wight, bu my mum was a East-Londoner who was encouraged to speak RP by *her* parents)
