let me explain… 1. his cognitive ability. Matt can understand and even take genuine interest in those interests of my kids because he is in a similar place intellectually. he also has a lot of experiential knowledge that makes him safe and reliable. 2. his tendency to hyper focus. due to my brother having Down syndrome and ADHD, he takes a special interest in (fixates on) things, routines, foods, and people. whether he is expected to or choosing to care for his niece and nephew, he does so with his full attention. no distractions. 3. his carefree sense of awareness. Matt doesn’t care what people think. he isn’t out there second guessing his caregiving or wondering what outsiders are thinking. he is doing a job the best he knows how, that is all he sees. and that allows him to care freely and to put the focus on the person in front of him, not the people around him. on paper, a lower IQ, a lack of awareness, or the tendency to hyperfixate don’t seem like preferable traits, and certainly not traits that lend themselves to being a strong caregiver. BUT isn’t that just like God to use our weaknesses to show His glory? my brother’s strengths are found in the way many would perceive him to be lesser. he’s flips the script. he shows all of us that our cognition, awareness, and attention are not indicators of inability.
