In Pollice Verso (1872), Jean-Léon Gérôme captures the most dramatic moment of the gladiatorial games. 
A victorious gladiator stands above his defeated rival, waiting for the crowd to decide his fate with a simple gesture. In Ancient Rome, the audience decided life or death using their thumbs. 
For centuries, historians debated what exactly the gestures meant — was thumbs up mercy, or death? Gérôme chose the version where thumbs down sealed a gladiator’s fate. This painting would later inspire Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000). The famous scene where the crowd turns their thumbs down to condemn the defeated comes directly from Gérôme’s vision. But the truth remains controversial. 
Some scholars argue the meaning might have been the opposite: that “thumbs up” meant death, and “thumbs down” meant mercy.
