Martin Guerre is wild. Never seen the movie but I've read the narra4ive written by Davis and every last bit of it is just "W H A T"

everyone else focused on "why spoon?", I'm here wondering "why hat?" 😅 like why are they carrying it there given all the other options?

Is it possible that the spoons were a political/class statement? Obviously rich people would have servants to lay out cutlery. People with less wealth needed to cook and serve themselves.

OMG, Brenda was trying to SAY you were an early Modernist and I got all up in her face and said I beg your Pardon's pardon, 'cause she's flat-out Medieval!

We know, and maybe this is later, that women in communities in northern countries had spoon bags, which were just another form of tie-on pockets. In pictures is this more of a guy thing?

Well, forks were mostly not a thing, and people probably had knives with them for other reasons, so spoons were the major utensil, right? I always figured it was for people who weren't eating at home.

"Oh, I'm a medievalist, not an early modernist!" [Hates every medieval movie, praises an early modern one,]

Is it likely they'd also carry a bowl somewhere? I could see the use of having a spoon, bowl, and primitive form of instant soup in a pre-sandwich world.

I just spent the weekend camping, and I ended up keeping my spoon in my pocket for 3 days. if you don't have a whole drawer full of utensils at your disposal, keeping your spoon close makes sense.

What Great Paintings Say apperantly has something on it - though I don't have access to the book to check. I will say I haven't seen any spoons in hats outside of Bruegel paintings. More specifically haven't seen any from France that have them. La Grande Feste de Nostre Village is a sort of Bruegel esque one but no spoon hats there 🥲

metal or wooden spoons tucked? maybe metal spoon was status. IIRC "one day in life of Ivan denisovich" had nice bit on importance of spoons to starving peasants
