@sugarskullangelic: Replying to @frstnmlstnm1 ..Dia de Los Muertos is NOT All Souls day and saying this is a contribution to indigenous cultural genocide. Also 17% of the Mexican population is entirely indigenous and they practice the original version of the tradition. #mexicantiktok #mexico #diadelosmuertos #dayofthedead #cempasuchil #mexicanamerican #chicana #chicanx #latina #latine #Chola #mexican #europeanammericans #culturalappropiation #morena #amlo #Hispanic
Didn't Disney try to copyright/trademark Dia de Los Muertos after the release of Coco? I feel like I heard something like that a while back

I’m Nahua and Otomí ! More people need to know this, it’s so important that in spite of it all our traditions managed to survive !

thankfully Coco was not about the origin of that day, just one experience of a family

I thought it was the other way around, that Día de los Muertos inspired All Souls Day. That’s been the Church’s MO in a lot of things.

I find many of us grew up with grandparents who wanted their children to "fit in" during the 40's/50's/60's. This had led to a huge disconnect for many on traditions, history, etc.

Interesting. My abuelita used to tell us to cry like on demand or to hold it until it was “needed” & she passed before I was old enough to ask & understand fully. Is it common practice across Mexico?

So I’m a Purépecha in Uruapan, Michoacán. I have learned about the Pre-Hispanic way of celebrating Dias (Days) de los Muertos AND I’ve experienced it with the Catholic + Purépecha mix. (continued)

waiting 9 days to bury the soul makes so much sense. My son hadn't said goodbye yet by the day we buried him. They need time 🕯✨️

Takes from Aztlantis podcast has an episode (Subversive Spirituality) that talks about the history of Dia de los Muertos and why it falls on the day it does. They use primary sources in the discussion
