Please, don’t leave your job just because you want to start a business. I’m saying this because I have seen people do it, and honestly, sometimes I just sit and wonder what we are doing. You get tired of your job, the environment is toxic, your boss is annoying you, you are no longer happy, and then one morning you say, “I’m done. I’m going to start my business.” Yes. Start the business. But please don’t resign first if you have not prepared yourself for what comes after the resignation. Recently, someone reached out to me. This person was very excited. They had decided they were leaving their job and going into business. The confidence was there! The excitement was there! The plans were there! So I asked one very simple question: “How much do you have in your emergency fund?” Silence. I asked about savings. The savings they had could barely carry them for four months. Four months! And this is someone who is about to leave a salary and start a business where they will need money to actually get the business moving. Now, I understand. Sometimes you are tired. Sometimes the workplace has become toxic. Sometimes you genuinely feel like you cannot continue. But being tired of your job and being financially ready to leave your job are two different things. And this is where I think many of us get it wrong. You start a business and, especially in the beginning, the business may not give you money to live on. Actually, the opposite may happen. You put money in. You buy stock. You pay transport. You pay rent. You pay workers. You market. You make mistakes. You learn. You sell. You make some money. Then you put that money back into the business. So now, where is your personal money coming from? Because you have bills. You still have to eat. You still have rent. You still have children. You still have transport. Life does not stop because you have decided to become an entrepreneur. This is why I keep telling people: if you want to start that side hustle, please start it. Start while you still have your salary. Test the idea. Learn the business. Make your mistakes while you still have another source of income. Let the business grow slowly. Build your emergency fund. Save. Understand your numbers. And when the business has started showing you that it can actually support you, then you can start thinking about leaving the job. Because entrepreneurship is already risky. You don't need to add unnecessary financial pressure to the risk. You can take a risk without throwing yourself into a hole. And please, don't resign because somebody on TikTok told you, “Quit your 9-5 and bet on yourself.” My friend, bet on yourself, yes. But first make sure you can afford the bet. Your salary may not be your dream. But for now, it might be the very thing financing the dream. Don't kill the income that is helping you build the business.
