Pedro Martinez was the anomaly. In an era dominated by the juiced up sluggers, Pedro Martinez was a 5’11”, 170 lb unstoppable force. From 1997 to 2003, which is widely known as the height of the steroid era, Pedro pitched to a 2.20 ERA, leading baseball in Hits/9 five separate times. Born just outside of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic baseball became his life from a young age. He signed with the Dodgers as a teenager, following his brothers footsteps. After debuting in 1992 with Los Angeles, he was traded to the Montreal Expos in 1994 where he would blossom into a star. By 1997 he won his first Cy Young award and with his free agency looming he became the top trade target for all of the big market teams. Eventually the Red Sox traded for him and signed him to a 6 year deal. Across that contract we would witness arguably the greatest 6 year stretch in MLB history. Pedro Martinez would be inducted into the hall of fame in 2015, going down as one of the greatest pitchers to ever step on a MLB mound. Follow for more💨
