@inactiveandarchived: ‼️READ CAPTION‼️TLDW: Self-determination theory (SDT) explains that executive dysfunction is the consequence of not feeling autonomous, competent and/or socially connected. The video explains how your environment (specifically for with autism, adhd, and victims of abûśë) can prevent those needs from being met and exacerbate executive dysfunction. If you don’t want to watch an 8 min video, that’s totally fine. Captions are enabled. Summarizing does not do the topic justice because understanding the source of the ED is critical to mitigating its effects. How self determination theory explaine executive dysfunction in ADHD and autism. #adhd #autism #executivedysfunction
👏👏👏 Thank you!

The issue is, I can't even do the things I love. The things I really, really want to do. I can't start the process to do them and it drives me crazy, I end up just paralyzed.

when I was in school, homework felt like an attack on my autonomy and a threat and I couldn't do it until it was threatening my grades 😭

Viewing my future self as a separate entity helped me so much! Im quick to do things for other ppl and neglected myself so I see future me as a friend I want to do favors for to make her life easier!

yeahh it’s the autonomy thing that’s ALWAYS missing for me. every time someone tells me to do something, i instantly feel deep repulsion because now any credit for that task completion goes to them

My therapist told me I need to reframe my motivations for doing something. Instead of “I should do the dishes I so don’t get yelled at,” it’s “Seeing a clean sink will make me feel better.”

The competence thing really makes me understand why I’m so sensitive to criticisms bc I literally don’t feel competent with anything I do. I also look at everything as something I have to do

Huh? I am motivated... i want to play my favourite game etc. I still cant start the process. Executive dysfunction is lacking the ability to do things you even want to do more than anything.

This also explains why a lot of ADHD/Autism peeps gravitate to things like video games. They're fun, you can play them in private to gain competency without embarrassment, you can knowledge hoard, etc

Huh. So it’s clear to me that the reason that body doubling might be effective is that it fills that relatedness or connectedness part. Wow
