Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday said he and the Justice Department “will not be intimidated” by those launching “unprecedented” attacks on his department and its work. “These repeated attacks on the Justice Department are unprecedented, and they are unfounded,” he said in testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. “I will not be intimidated, and the Justice Department will not be intimidated. We will continue to do our jobs, free from political influence, and we will not back down from defending democracy.” The attorney general accused House Republicans of abusing their power by trying to hold him in contempt for refusing to turn over audio recordings of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s interview with President Biden in the classified documents probe. “Certain members of this committee and the Oversight Committee are seeking contempt as a means of obtaining — for no legitimate purpose — sensitive law enforcement information that could harm the integrity of future investigations,” he said. “This effort is only the most recent in a long line of attacks on the Justice Department’s work.” The House Oversight and Judiciary committees voted last month to hold the attorney general in contempt of Congress, sending the matter to the full House, which has not yet taken it up. “I view contempt as a serious matter, but I will not jeopardize the ability of our prosecutors and agents to do their jobs effectively in future investigations,” the AG said. #attorneygeneral #merrickgarland #justicedepartment #doj #houseofrepresentatives #cspan
