I’m only addressing the first 15 min of a 2 hour and 20 min interview here. And it took me 10 min and I only addressed half of what I wanted to. Over 2 hours where they bring up important topics that many of us have been discussing and working on for years. But the intellectual dishonesty and intentional misrepresentation of cause in the conversation was honestly too much to watch sometimes. Do you understand how hard it is for actual experts in this field to combat this and discuss these topics with the nuance and accuracy they deserve? Especially when we’re up against a social media machine that thrives on and rewards conspiracies and fear. Let’s be clear. Americans are unhealthy in spite of nutrition research. Not because of it. 95% of Americans do not meet the recommended intake of dietary fiber, which is 25-30 grams per day. 90% of Americans do not meet the recommended daily intake of vegetables, which is 2-3 cups per day. About 70% of Americans exceed the recommended intake of added sugar of no more than 10% total calories. And around 80% of Americans do not meet the recommended exercise/physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes per week. Not only exercise, but Americans aren’t even walking. The average American only takes 3,000-4,000 steps daily. Research also consistently shows that a significant percentage of Americans would prefer to take prescription medication over making lifestyle changes, like improving eating habits and exercising. They are simply not following evidence-based recommendations in nutrition or physical activity. It’s certainly not that the recommendations themselves are corrupt. Americans are also unhealthy in spite of government health initiatives. Not because of them. The Healthy People Initiative is a federal program launched by the US government to set national health goals and objectives for improving the health of Americans. The initiative addresses many public health topics, like chronic disease prevention, improving mental health, and promoting healthier behaviors like better nutrition, physical activity, and reduced substance use. Each decade, the initiative makes ambitious, measurable goals. And while some targets are met, many are never fully reached and objectives fall short of goals. Americans are not unhealthy because they do not purchase enough high priced supplements or expensive packaged foods from people like Dr. Means or others. And they are not unhealthy because nutrition researchers, the federal government, and the medical community are all conspiring to keep people unwell. I wonder what their personal upside is for trying to make us believe that. They’re counting on us to not question these things and to just accept what they’re saying as true. They’re relying on some of the real issues that are present in research and healthcare to bring credibility to the rest of the misleading information they are spreading. It’s incredibly ironic that people who support a political party that strongly supports a free-market, less regulated capitalist economy that prioritizes profits above all else, including people’s health - are all of a sudden shocked that industries in this country, including food and pharmaceutical companies would be doing just that. If we're being intellectually honest about helping people, the discussion should focus on unethical corporate practices and the political systems that enable them. That's the real root cause—not scientific researchers and healthcare professionals dedicating their lives to public health. 😓
