I didn't realize until I was middle aged, and a Harvard grad, that it's more important to learn reasoning skills than exactly how to do something which will be outdated in five years.

This is almost completely wrong in the case of math. The amount of times a teacher will say “you didn’t find the answer the correct way” is too often for this to be the case.

ok i don’t know about american schools because they seem kind if terrible, but over in australia u can actually learn useful full stuff such as loans, annuities, investments and earth geometry (1)

Unfortunately most of our education systems are based on memorizing for events like exams. After the exams everything is forgotten. Hence no problem solving skills developed during the learning prcs.
